whistle or whine?
When I am on the fwy and have the windows up and the radio off, when I accelerate, I can hear a faint whistle, not sure where its coming from. Seems like its coming from right under the shifter but I cannot tell for sure. If I put in the clutch, noise goes away, if I dont accel, the noise isnt there, its only when I accelerate in 5th or 6th gear, and only between 3-4k rpms. The problem is, I never listened to this from the start so it may have been there all along, I talked to someone else who says they get this, but then I rode in my friends (his has 20k miles, and it didnt do it, mine has 40k miles). It isnt the same as that squeak/whistle you get under partial acceleration that dissapears, if I keep accelerating it stays. Does this sound normal or could it be a sign of the rear-end, or just normal tranny noise?
hmm... mine does it when I first turn crank it up. but only when it's not warm. it sounds like its supercharged or something, but then it goes away when it's warmed up. i am tryin to think of anything similar to that when I had my 2000...
Sounds familiar, i believe Xviper said a whistle like that could just be the fuel pump, and another idea i have heard is just alternator inteferencfe in your speaker power wires. Not really sure exactly but those are just some diagnoses i have seen and heard.
well the loudest I hear it is when I put my head by where the shift knob is and accelerate, its still faint.... just cant tell if its coming from the rear-end, the tranny or where.
I think it's always been there. If it's associated with clutch position, it'll be related to the clutch or tranny. If it's that faint, I think you are obsessing too much. If it's bad, it'll get worse in time and you won't need to try so hard to hear it.

if i try to make it happen between 2-3k rpms it doesnt happen, 3-4 is when it happens when i accelerate, or if I hold the accelerator it continues to happen, after that, it kind of changes/gets more faint.
No two cars are the same and therefore, you shouldn't rely so much on what other cars sound like. Your friends car may have a slightly different clutch friction point, different fluid, different amount of fluid in the tranny, different clutch wear patterns, different states of lubrication of various parts.
