Default Why are the front are rear tire sizes different?

Hi All,

I am curious why are the the rear tires are wider than the front tires? Is there a reason why Honda didn't make the fronts the same? I heard the rear tires will wear 2 times faster than the fronts, is that right?

Thanks,

Archon

Hi performance cars come "dialed" in with certain kinds of attributes of pre-determined oversteer or understeer. This is made possible by suspension settings and type of rubber on the road. The Vettes of the mid-'80's were produced with some of these things in mind. They discovered that high speed stability was a bad side effect of the other "performance" tuning. Rather than re-tuning everything, they quickly discovered that by staggering the tire sizes front/rear, the high speed instability was resolved. Manufacturers of such vehicles have used this knowledge ever since. Besides, this made the car look cool.

The general theory for performance RWD cars is that the front tires should be narrower for good directional control, and the rear tires need to be wider to lay down the HP.

FWD cars have both the steering and drive in the front. With opposing goals, they simply make all the tires the same size all around. This makes rotation possible.
