and still more or less optimize output, but it's possible- and the advantage is less weight and less complexity.

There are also SOHC engines with VTEC.

You are right, it wouldn't be such a big deal except for the fact that it actually says DOHC in big letters on the Spark Plug Cover.

Damnit!!! At 3am in the morning, my friend asked me why the S2000 has an SOHC instead of a DOHC. Thinking that he did some research and found out it was SOHC, I didn't question him, but rather I believed him. So I did him a favor and posted this thread to get some answers. Now I look like an idiot.

PS. I posted this right after I got a good laugh from the "Why you won't hear VTEC kick in" thread.

Yea Moderator, Please remove this post like it never happened.

I just found out, after my friend and I had a good laugh about the "Why you won't hear VTEC kick in" thread...he asked me why S2K has SOHC instead of DOHC, to trick me into posting a stupid thread. He got me good...that fuquer.

In OHC motors the camshafts (which define when and how much the intake and exhaust valves open and close) are on the top of the engine (head), and either actuate the valves through direct contact (ie, all Honda engines)
The camshafts open the valves via rocker arms which in turn has a shaft that houses oil pressure that at a certain rpm, 6000 in this case, open the vtec valve which causes a pin to lock a floating rocker. This rocker works with a lobe of higher lift and I think duration. A normal car with 4 valves per cylinder will have 4 rockers and 4 cam lobes. Our cars have 6 rockers and 6 lobes per cylinder. This is for 2 intakes and 2 exhaust valves. The one extra intake and exhaust rockers just float independently until the vtec valve opens. That is a short explanation on how we get power and fuel economy with the help of programmed fuel injection and a bunch of computer stuff that I am not trained in.
