Default Worst day! Mechanical Over Rev

Hi Guys, new ap2 owner here.

My buddy was driving the car and he went from 2-1 at redline (90km/h / 56mph). engaged it for about 2 seconds with the rear kicking out.
I was surprised it didn't blow up on the spot. it idles and drives fine surprisingly.

Just wondering if there's anything i should be worried about, bent valves, pistons and such.

Super cheesed right now but nothing else i can do except see what the best thing to do is.
Wont be driving it til its solved just to be safe.

Just hoping to gain some insight from this matured group.

how high did the revs get ? If you bent valves you would know by now as the car would be running erratically and you could have CELs. The ap2 has better retainers. Let us know how high the rpms got on the tach.

I am going to say you might be alright. Let us know how high the rpms got on the tach.
Thanks for the reply Zero,

it held at 90kmh when i looked ever it looked like it was trying to pass 9000 rpm for a good 2 seconds. It was bouncing off the revs on 1st
I think the rev was pretty high though. Probably over 8700 since top speed for 1st is 36.9MPH/ 60KMh.

Im getting my mechanic to come over to do a compression test on it i hope that could solve some issues and im worried about other parts of the car like the tranny or diff too.

Just dont want a blown motor or have to replace any parts. Trying to keep it oem.

Still a chance you lucked out. Have your mechanic friend do a leakdown test too, not sure a compression test will tell you everything you need to know.

The tranny and diff will be fine. If it idles smooth and no check engine (misfire) codes, and your leakdown and compression test get a passing grade you might be okay. With the plugs coming out might have a good look at them, if your buddy has a boroscope have a peak at the piston tops. Good luck.

My notes show 1st gear at 55mph (90km/h) is 11,948 rpm! Hope your buddy has deep pockets.

literally 12,000 rpm. God damn. if it bounced off the limter you might be in luck because it hit the fuel cut instead of going HIEEEEEEE .boom

But...he mechanically over revved it. The fuel cut wouldn't save it from that.

It can't bounce off the limiter because the wheels are forcing the engine to turn.

The tach was probably blinking (means literally nothing in this case) And if his friend was flooring it, the wheels just had an easier time turning the engine because even if fuel was NOT being sprayed, there's low vacuum since the throttle plate is open.

OP...checking compression and doing a leakdown should tell you if you crushed a valve or damaged a piston/liner or something that affects compression.

Unfortunately, if you cracked a rod or damaged a bearing, it'll just show up later. I suppose you could drop the pan and check.

Would slugging your friend in the gut make you feel better? Idk...

This sucks, I'm sure.

Good luck.

The wheels locked up...so you may not have seen the full 12K RPM. I'm sure the clutch slipped a little as well. It might only have seen 10-11K and you may be OK.

Why TF is your friend so slow witted lol. Leaving it like that for 2 seconds and shit.

I'd slug him right in the gut if it were me (whilst also verbally abusing him to let him know I thought he was slow witted).

How the F could he mess up like that?!

The AP2 retainers are quite strong and can apparently handle a pretty high over rev but the problem is what else could have been damaged in the process...
If the car is idling and driving fine now then its a good sign but still, get everything checked out as others have mentioned to be sure. You want to avoid leaving a ticking time bomb...ticking.

Yea, the fact that the rear kicked out means there was a loss of traction, and that could have saved you. Major bummer though. Hope it turns out ok.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.
My buddy mechanic was able to make it over on Saturday and these were the results of the compression test.

cold:
150, 30, 60, 180
warm:
160, 40, 70, 160

Brought it to the shop for a leak down test and to see what else could be damaged. At this point I hope it’s just a valve train replacement.

feel like crying lmao only had the car for a week before this happened!!!
