Is AARP worth it?
Sometimes hotel discounts are a bit better than AAA. Other places sometimes offer discounts with the AARP card. We spring for the $ each year.
Oh and I got a great discount on my first pair of progressive glasses using AARP.

What he said. They have significant numbers and sometimes generate very good disacounts with some suppliers...I have had success with rental cars in particular.
I used to have a better opinion of AARP. These days it seems ...
1 - They're more about marketing than anything else, and often I can find better 'deals' with some searching on the internet. "The only _____ endorsed by AARP!" So? How much is that endorsement costing (that is rolled into customer cost)?
2 - I don't need to be spoon-fed; although once in a while they alert me to a topic of interest, most of the time I'm getting better information elsewhere.
3 - As often as not, I find their political position disagreeable and/or to lack depth of research and context ... so 50/50 on this.
For me, not worth it.
P.S.: Did they ever 'endorse' the S2000?

I find their publications have some interesting short articles....good "breakfast table" reading 
Their socio-political stances are usually pretty well-balanced....all with the interests of senior citizens in mind.
I do agree with others that their intensive marketing gets a little over-the-top. The monthly mag arrived in today's mail and the first thing that I did is TEAR OUT all of the "bound-in" advertising reply cards and other
