Rob, you're probably right about the pretax payment not being taxable, but I don't have time to verify. And you are definately right about the supplemental nature of AFLAC. It's not supposed to be the major medical policy we all should have.
Everyone needs to read the fine print, but I believe the AfLAC disability policies cover you even if you're not at work. It would be a lousy policy if it didn't.

I just spoke to an AFLAC agent I know. Here's the scoop. If you pay for disability with pre-tax dollars, the benefits are taxable on receipt. AFLAC suggests that the Accident policy be paid with pre-tax dollars and the disability policy be paid with after-tax dollars, making the benefits tax free, and most employees go along with that.
The basic AFLAC accident policy will pay benefits if you are injured on or off the job. The basic disability policy pays only if you are injured/disabled off the job, because workers comp normally covers you if injury occurs on the job.
