Does anyone recognize these names/people besides me? I met the first one in person. I suspect Jim might. Hard to believe it's been 60 years since these guys were on the track together.

Imagine how it felt to be known immediately as "number 2" or "number 3" or worse.... "number 4" ???? Obviously, they were never going to be Number 1.
Number 4 was at another disadvantage: His name didn't begin with "F" and his name didn't even SOUND eye-talian

Fits, that is the Italian National anthem. And yes I'm familiar with all those drivers having read every racing book in our local library at a very young age. My favorite drivers from that era are Tazio Nuvolari, the flying Mantuan, and Hans Hermann.
Here is a link to Fangio's museum.

Tazio's victory in an Alfa P3 over Mercedes and Auto Union in the '35 GP placed him up with greatest drivers of all time. A little before my time but a great read.
I got to see Hans Herman drive an Abarth-Porsche at the 1962 LeMans. He took 1st in 1600 class and 7th overall.

Good man. I too scoured the libraries for anything on European racing.
