I take Actifed and have for years. Usually works well for me. In the late winter/early spring I have to take a couple at a time as oppose to 1, but they do the job for me.

I've never been tested for allergies. Once I was having problems and the secretary at the allergist's office told me he'd likely just have me try medicine to see if it worked, vs starting testing. Well, heck why spend the time heading to their office? My nurse prac can prescribe if I want to go that route.

I know, even if allergic, I would not deal with allergy shots, so why bother testing.

In the fall, if I sometimes get what I call allergy throat, I use OTC generic Claritin. That seems to work for me. I'm not sure I have actual allergies, as I don't have a problem that often, but OTOH, my asthma tends to flare in the spring and more often the fall. Could be allergies, or it could be that the irritants in the air, pollen, mold, and what not pi$$ off my lungs.

Not sure which, but I've not had a problem in quite some time.

Deb -- As promised: The stuff I got by prescription is "Rhinocort Aqua" (which is something called budesonide in a water solution). The instructions were to use it for 3 weeks continuously (once daily) and then stop and evaluate the results -- it's supposed to impart some kind of desensitization to whatever's causing the sinusitis, I guess.

I used it for a couple of weeks, then got a (virus-based) cold, so I had to stop for a few days. I'm back on it now, and I think it's helping with the cold's final throes and with the allergy thing as well. HPH

I'm going to try that. That is how I would describe alot of my problems - throat is very unhappy. I've been sucking on cough syrup but that does not help much. Maybe the Claritin stuff will. This is the first year I've ever noticed the problem.

Getting old sucks: I think I've developed a mild allergic reaction to poison ivy. Never used to be an issue, but I think I react to it now.

100%! Since I hit 50 years-old in January, I've been sliding down a slippery slope trying to get my footing. The bod ain't behaving.

That also happened to me. I never had poison ivy in my life, until I hit my 40's.

Allergies can pop up any time. We had a dog in our house when I was a kid, then we had a cat. No one had any allergies. All of a sudden, as an adult, my sister became allergic to dogs, cats, smoke, and a bunch of other stuff. She has a hard time as her allergies cause an immediate asthma flare. Needless to say, she avoids houses with cats, dogs and smokers.
