almost 17 great years but time to say good bye.

I got the toy in May of '02 and have put 56k miles on it but on Monday I'll put the last 20 miles on it, by me anyways.
I'll be driving it to the dealer and saying good bye. :brokehrt:
I hate to say good bye to it but I've only put 1000-1500 miles on it in the last two years total.
My commute sucks for a manual box as it has slowly turned into solid stop and go most days.
Along the way, I got old too. I don't fit in it as well as I used to and the joints don't exactly help getting in and out.
I'm going to shed the SL500 as well. With the S63 coupe at home the SL wasn't getting much love either.
So in the blink of an eye I'll go from two convertibles to none.

But don't cry for me Argentina.
I will be driving home something a little more fun.
I be bringing home a Brilliant blue 2016 AMG GT-S with 9400 on the clock.
Mind you the license plate holder location is almost enough to make me call it off but I'll figure something out.

I'm not crazy about he blue but with used market you don;t always get a choice.
The interior however I am in love with and since that is what I will be looking at while I drive.

The layout is remarkably similar to the S2000. Front mid-engine with rear wheel drive.
Although in this case the transmission is a rear dual clutch transaxle with electronic diff.
There is a crapload of plastic for intercoolers and such ahead of the motor which is actually the shiny metal part in the back.

When I started making noise about a GT-S, someone made a comment about hydrolocking.
It turns out that was on a C63 not a GT-S. As you can see below the intakes are well above knee high

I always thought the braking on the S2000 was very good. Stab the brakes hard on this and your eyeballs wanna pop out.
The rotors on this beast are ceramic and are larger than the rims on my S2000.
These are 19 inch wheels and barely fit over them. I do hope they last a long time it will be a fortune to replace them.

Congrats! That top doesn't drop though??

boltonblue 12-27-2018 06:49 PM

nope that's the GT-C the next rung up and yet even more money. and since it is a 2017, newer and even more money on top.

I'm a fan of the blue! I'm sure you'll love it.

If you’ve got an ‘02 with only 56k why are you taking it to a dealer? I’d think you could get more selling it yourself.

Holy maceral, you took the body off just so you could show us the engine and chassis?

Beautiful car, have a great time with it.

FWIIW: I would love to buy a new car such as this. But, in Virginia the personal property tax at 4.56% every year based on the Blue Book Value prevents me from doing so. The property tax on our fifteen year old S-2000 is higher than that of our ten year old Honda Fit. I have a childhood friend that lives in Florida that leases a Genesis G-90 for his wife. Their lease is up in January of 2020. Their buy out is $22,700. The last I knew (March of 2018) they will have under 30K miles on it. I can live with paying the taxes on it, knowing the history. 420 HP with all of the toys.

Congrats! Nice car.

Well done. Enjoy to the limit. Buona fortuna.

I saw an earlier comment about trade-in value versus self sale. Do you mind sharing what they allowed for the S2000?

boltonblue 12-28-2018 04:32 AM

It's a dual trade so the individual value is a little fuzzy.
I'm getting 30K for the S2000 and the '03 Sl500 with 69K on it.
the SL500 is around 11-13k which puts the S2000 between 17 and 19k.
although you can mush and push the numbers around a little.
I was only into the SL for 11K. I might have done a little better selling them individually but I'm not unhappy.
Also it's winter in New England, not exactly ideal for selling convertible 2 seaters.
Hopefully that actually worked to my advantage buying this car. and it's a few days before the end of the year and they need to make their numbers.

Patty, Most respectfully, I was fairly confidant on your color opinion without even mentioning the car ;)

Matt, Our excise tax is based on $25/$1000 of value where value is 90% of sticker 1st yr, 60% 2nd, 40% 3rd yr, 25% 4th yr, and then stabilizes forever at 10%
expensive cars never get cheap according to the state.

Harry finding the limits of this will be difficult. I'm not quite sure I want to track it yet. The tires are Michelin Pilot Super Sport which aren't cheap to replace.
I may decide to take the AMG driving course and get to play with someone else's ... :D
I've noticed with my S63 coupe that even approaching the limit is almost impossible on public roads.
That has 1,100 lbs over the GT-S. but while the S63 is quite a sophisticated gentlemen's car, the GT-S is a savage by comparison.

Dean, what can I say?

By the way, note the big black canister next to the engine. that's is the oil reserve, it's a dry sump motor.
