To my shock and horror, I discovered at SF06 that many of you think Virginia is a flat state!!! NOT. Here are a few photos I snapped driving over only one of the many mountains I had to climb and descend in order to get home. Please note that these mountains are in sight distance of my house and I was on the last leg of my trip and only a little over 20 miles from home. These roads are extremely well maintained and perfectly banked through all the hairpins. I LOVE IT. Some days when I'm feeling a little blue and the sun is shining, these roads beckon and I drop everything and take the S out for a little spell. It is GRAND. This was the best part of my SF drive. At one point I gave up clicking the camera through the windshield and resorted to clicking the twisty pattern on the gps. My apologies for the blurry shots, but you can get the idea and I was busy downshifting and gripping the wheel:
On flat ground now and anticipating the climb:
Oops -- a teensy shower, but the clouds are breaking:
You are right Darlene we have some very nice scenery and roads in the Blue Ridge of Virginia. Here are 2 pics I shot coming back from Fall Colors '04, these are about 30 minutes West of Roanoke. It was a beautiful drive back.
This road reminded me of the Dragon with all the curves in it.
beautiful. I've never driven much around the Roanoke area, but love the roads in Amherst County, Nelson County, Bedford County. Sadly though the 'burbs are moving out further and further and gobbling up all the nice drives with cookie cutter houses.
Really nice scenery. Looks fun to drive too. My favorite around here goes pretty much straight up Lookout Mountain (or ridge as Mike Garrison would call it). It features several hairpins and off camber decreasing radius turns. It's really a blast.
I don't know for sure, but I think I'd have trouble driving my S in those twisties. I think we'd be better off in Virginia.
You could have driven it in easily enough! That crevasse was literally big enough to have driven a semi into. Getting it out would have been more difficult.
