The American work ethic

I agree with you, Jim, but I've also noticed particularly in my youngest daughter's age bracket (over 25, less than 30) a difference in their desire to attain "things". She and many of her friends have often expressed to us that they are not motivated to buy houses, own a lot of "stuff", etc. and would rather spend their money on electronics for entertainment and education, buy books, live in an apartment due to less maintenance/upkeep, etc. They seem to want just enough to be comfortable. We were the generation who wanted excess stuff, liked collections, etc., but they're not into that. They want rewarding work but not necessarily in financial compensation. They want to ENJOY what they do and feel it makes a difference, making enough money to live comfortably but that's about it. I'm really surprised at that attitude.

Actually, since I perform all the labor myself, the re-do is relatively inexpensive. Home Depot and Lowes certainly aren't getting rich off me. And at this point, I'm only doing it with resale in mind. We're downsizing. I'm now working two full time jobs and would rather have my free time to myself, rather than spend it on a house, lawn, cars, etc..If I could only talk Rori into living in a tent, life would be so much simpler.
^^ I understand. Diamond Jim refuses to part with any of his beloved things in order for us to move into a tent or cardboard box with a corrugated metal roof so we can romantically listen to the drumming of the rain. Sometimes I think he enjoys my life of servitude to a dwelling that must be cleaned and a kitchen where I must prepare food for His Majesty, where I'd rather forage in the dumpsters of local restaurants. . . no, I'm wrong. forget all that drivel. I'm happy where I am.
That cabin was intended as my retirement tent, but the best laid plans ... +1 Chris loves her work in Houston, and she's the boss. I agree, Rob, heat and light are good!
