Last night a 49 year old guy walked into an LA Fitness aerobics class, turned off the lights and started shooting. Killing four women, injuring 9 more before killing himself. According to initial reports his girlfriend dumped him and he was going in to get revenge. According to the news he has been posting these rants on his blog for the past month even detailing when and where he was going to do this. Question: If you were to read these warning signs would you have reported it? It seems to me that people just don't care and do not take these things seriously anymore. A real tragedy in Pittsburgh.

 

The guy had a regular job--he recently got a promotion--and aparently gave no signs in his day to day life that he was about to do something like this. Who reads blogs. And if they do, would they take the vague ramblings like his as a serious threat. When it comes to taking action against others who give signs of instability, most people don't but I think it is more out of denial on their part than apathy. One thing for sure, it is a tragedy.

On an upbeat note, the two young ladies who were held by North Korea were released to Bill Clinton and are on their way home.

 

Something about that seems strangely ironic to me.

 

It's difficult to determine what anyone is going to do. Unfortunately, I don't believe there is much law enforcement can do until they actually go through with the deed. I think back at Virginia Tech and the fact that the school didn't even pay attention to the individuals background. We are so concerned with being "politically correct" that we leave out important parts of a person's background.

 

Things like that don't normally happen in Pittsburgh. Very sad.

Dave: Likely only a close sibling or a spouse - committed to do so - can penetrate thr level of anger and resentment. I think hate and dislike can be managable issues for most people, but resentment is a festering issue not often healed by time..

 

John, It's really scary when you suspect or know someone is becoming a walking time bomb. He has 16 yr old daughter and 14 yr old son; otherwise, all his relatives live in Canada and I believe over time he has developed issues with all of them. It seems to us his wife is his only hope and according to his friend that does leave much. I have not seen his wife or daughter in years; they no longer come to any car meets with him.

I found his blog, he was a very lonely individual looking for friends. He does describe going to the gym before with loaded guns, than he said he "chickened out."
