Default Anyone been to the Florida Keys?

The +1 and I are planning a November vacation, possibly to South Florida. We can use our timeshare at a location in Pompano Beach. Ever since I've had the S (all of 2 1/2 years) I've had this urge to drive it our to Key West -- you know, top down, sea breeze -- all those great fantasy vacations.

It is 700 miles from home in SC to Pompano Beach -- a long way in the S, the longest we have done so far is about 500 miles.

So, in reality, if you have made this drive -- what's it like. But then, maybe we are just looking for affirmation of our dreams

We are listening -- thanks.

I say if you have the time, go for it!

I know nothing about that area, except that there will likely be a fair amount of traffic in that area as many of the "snow birds" will have arrived, but I still say go for it!

From where I sit in MA, FL sounds REAL good in November.

Good points, Lainey. We are somewhat torn b/c late Fall on the South Carolina coast is just idyllic -- quiet, beautiful weather, no crowds -- and it is only 4 hours from home.

No crowds is a good thing...I'd have a tough time deciding too. Could you do FL at another time when it might not be so crowded, like early May perhaps?

Not a bad idea, but doesn't it get pretty hot by May? I've been to Naples and Ft. Myers at that time of the year and the weather was getting pretty sticky

November is nice down there. The Snow birds do tend to clutter things up as most of them never drive except when they are down there and they will make you learn to scream and cuss as you drive.

I lived down there for years and it was frustrating as hell. You wanted to take out a bull horn and tell them it won't tip over when you go around a corner.

But enough about the pests in Florida. The drive from Miami to the first Key is interminable and boring with no scenery but once you get to the Keys proper it is worth it all.

Stop often. You'll find a spot that just makes you want to take your shoes off and put your toes in the sand so do it often.

Go slow, well that's a given since there is only one road down the keys. Did I mention the snow birds? Well one snow bird can tie up the traffic for miles.

You'll find some stretches that are pure 50's and then some 90's glitzy areas, but there are still mile after mile of pure fantastic nature and gorgeous blue water.

I find that almost any stop in Keys is worth it except for Key West. I love the idea of Key West and have loved Key West in the past, but it has become THE gay haven of America so you'd better be prepared for some excentricities. How bout a sex shop next to the ice cream shop? They'll have things in the window that will make you want to go inside and ask what they are for - DON'T! Trust me, you don't want to know!

Many of the cottages (B&Bs) come with or without shackles.

Are there any particularly good spots to stop in the keys? I'm going to Miami in January and want to make the most of my first trip to Florida. Thanks!

Depends upon what you are looking to do. With me it's diving and snorkling so it's just about anywhere.

There's always John Pennekamp park but if you like things a little less structured there is also a little state park down the road a couple of hours. I forget the name of the park but it is right on the side of the road on the left hand side going down. Picture post card perfect.

Picnic tables great snorkling right from the beach.

I don't know if he's still there, but there is a HUGE Barracuda called Oscar that frequents both parks. He is so old he's black and is bigger than me. I always wondered what I would do in a huge emergency in the water. Now I know, I stood up. I am glad the water was shallow but it wouldn't have mattered, I'd have still stood up.

I sorta snorkled into him. I looked up and there was an eye that appeared to be as big as my mask inches from me. He is used to people and there have been no reports of any troubles with him ever. Unfortunately I didn't know that at the time.

I usually love cudas. They are fun to watch and follow, this just caught me completely off guard. Also they are not aggressive towards humans. I have heard second hand tales of shiny jewelry attracting them, not in a good way, so I'd leave the earrings in the car. Ha Ha, just kidding.

Whoooo 700 miles in an S2000; that could be an adventure!

I really don't mean to make fun of that but we have had a Regional MGA meet there for the past 4 years and people in 50 year old cars drive there from all over the country. I have not been able to do it yet but next year it's on my schedule (in April). Clearly it's a nutty place, so I figure we will fit right in.

My advice. Don't over plan it. Just do it. Throw off your clothes and throw beads to people on the street. Make the S2000 crowd proud.
