All the drive ins I knew of died years ago. Sucks, cause it was a cool way to go see a movie, especially for car people. I did hear there was one popping up near me again though. I think the last time I went to one was back in the 80's. And we got the crappy speaker :P
I remember seeing Star Wars at the drive-in when I was a kid sitting in the back of the 73 town&country wagon looking it up that would of been in 1977. The last movie I watched at a drive in was in castleton vermont as an adult and that movie was bird on a wire which came out in 1990.
The only drives ins I know of currently are hathaways drive in in north hoosick new york and the rustic drive in in north smithfield rhode island.
I saw "The Fast and the Furious" at a drive in up in Atlanta when it came out. Would have been around 2001? It was a special showing for attendees of the NOPI Nationals, a big annual multi-day car show held at Atlanta Motor Speedway. But I think the drive-in was still operating on a regular schedule back then.
The Beverly Drive-in in Hattiesburg, MS closed in 1987 following the death of the owner. But it reopened a few years later under new management. It finally closed for good in October of 2010 after a major fire.
The Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop includes a 14 screen drive-in that shows first-run movies every night of the year. No car speakers, though. Audio is broadcast over low power FM.
Living in a state that loves cars, we still have eight. Coldwater (list in top ten in country), Honor, Hartford, Muskegon, Carsonville (since 1947), Dearborn, Flint, and Dowagiac.
I've driven by the one in Coldwater a number of times but never been there. I used to go to them when I was a Pontiac lover (1956).
