Baltimore
Wow, a lot of opinions piled onto a simple request of the well-being of Baltimore people. Everyone has one, I guess.
I work at Johns Hopkins in B'more. While nothing came close to my particular location (Mt Washington), there are other JH facilities which currently have armed National Guard soldiers stationed in front---especially the hospital itself, which is very near to the Senior Center that was burned.
I was born and raised in Baltimore City. I can't begin to express how disheartened I was Monday during the violence. As mentioned above, the facilities that were damaged represent years of work and investment which may never be recouped. Ultimately, the whole city suffers.
However, the city has been suffering for some time now from problems within the BPD which is currently under federal investigation---not only for the Freddie Gray incident, but also the numerous other people who have died in police custody over the past 18 months or so. One case was even ruled a homocide by the ME---while in custody! Preliminary results are due out this Friday and I shudder to think what the reaction could potentially be, although I believe we will not see the type of violence we saw on Monday. To be honest, I think that bolt has been shot. I hope, anyway.
I find that I am not mad at what happened. Rather, I am heart-broken. I sincerely hope all issues can be addressed to begin the healing process. Yesterday and today featured quite a bit of goodwill on the part of almost everyone in Baltimore---a truly encouraging sign. The governor has opened a website where people can donate their time and/or money to vetted charity organizations that are at work now trying to rebuild: http://governor.maryland.gov/mdunites/
Thank you for posting up your concern. I appreciate it very much.

There are many philosophical points which one can ponder in the Politics section. But not here.
I think the intent of this thread was clear. It's about making sure friends in Baltimore are okay. I'm pretty sure that's all.

Sorry. Guilty. It's an emotional situation and I let myself get drawn into expressing my own emotions.
Thanks, dwb993, for your information and your insight.
We are exactly a 20 mile drive SW from the scene of much of this downtown mess. There is zero impact in the 'burbs but watching those thugs literally running and jumping from car to parked car along the curb, denting, breaking the windows and for no reason is just disgusting. I can't imagine anyone owning an S2K would park it on the street at night near there or probably even during the day but I did see some descent cars on the video that was posted. Hope those guys get arrested and convicted, just awful willful destruction of innocent people's property. My wife wants to move into DC and I always say, "sure, go for it, but it must have a two car garage and two off street parking places." I know we can't afford that in any neighborhood where she would live so I'm safe.
Our community of do-gooders accumulated three truckloads of toiletries, diapers, formula and other necessities since they've destroyed the only places they could shop for these things and many don't have transportation. That stuff was delivered today, we have some great young folks here who do, not just say.
Finally, for those who haven't read up and don't know, this isn't one kid, one incident but a lifetime and generations of police thuggery that is well documented in Baltimore. They have had to pay out millions in damages for lawsuits against them that they settled. Yes, MOST cops are good folks but then again MOST of us wouldn't be a cop no matter what we were paid so think about that too. It does attract, particularly in the city, a certain type of individual and they get hardened by what they see. We desperately need to end the "war on drugs" and move forward and stop incarcerating at the highest level and overall numbers in the world.

Justice has been served. All 6 police officers who arrested and took Freddy into custody have been charged with Homicide and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. However, I do not agree with the violence which took place in Baltimore which resulted in personal and property damage and I never will. Hope everyone is safe.
One officer, the driver of the van that carted Gray away after his arrest, was charged with a count known as second-degree depraved heart murder. Other charges against the six officers included manslaughter, assault and misconduct.
