I vote for your explanation! The cell phone definitely has a large part in this, plus since the batteries aren't really connected to each other (+ to -), they could only be used as conductors to focus the energy from the phone.
I admit, though, I did fall into the scientist habit of making the assumption that the person is not deliberately trying to fool us. Fine thread (or any other stage magician trick) is also a possibility.
