Cataracts and corrective surgery
Had cataract surgery on both eyes in April 2015. Very easy for me and a very good outcome. My implants are “slightly myopic.” And, they are just the standard monofocal. Rarely need to wear glasses at all. Can read pretty tiny print with no glasses. I do wear glasses for driving even though I passed the vision test for my license without glasses.
Can also see well at computer distance.
My husband had cataract surgery on both eyes in June 2019. He had a toric lens implanted because of astigmatism. He needs no glasses for distance but needs to wear reading glasses. Previously, he had a very strong prescription for distance. He previously wore contacts and is thrilled to no longer wear contacts. If I recall correctly, he had what is called mono vision for the cataract surgery. One eye was corrected for closeup and the other for distance. He already had mono vision contacts and was successful with that. Apparently some people cannot adjust to that. The ophthalmologist would not do mono vision cataract surgery unless the patient had already shown success with mono vision contacts. I would ask my husband the details about his cataract surgery but I am sure he would not remember. My memory is much better than his. At least with some things.
If you do have cataract surgery done, I would recommend lots of discussion with your ophthalmologist/surgeon regarding the results that you would like based on your job, hobbies, preferences, etc.
Of course, the objective of cataract surgery is not just to wear glasses less often, but to get rid of the cloudy lens which makes it difficult to see.
There are many more options of implants now compared with when I had it done in 2015. However, I did not really need any of the “fancier” ones anyway. Lots of different price points, too, with different implant options. Also, insurance coverage differs depending on the implant options.

Had my right eye done first, and am now just finishing up with drops in the left eye. Things are much clearer now and the doctor said my vision is at 20-30. I'll be going in for new glasses April 4th. Doctor said I should be able to pass the drivers license exam but recommends wearing glasses as things will be clearer. Now without glassed I see very well except reading. Glad I had it done!
In our age group, cataracts are common. Mine have started, so have Ricks. When the time comes, I'd expect to have the surgery done. Not sure about corrections. I don't need glasses for distance..........yet. I don't think I'd want any more surgery than necessary. I'll wear glasses if I have to.
