Default Cell Phone Poll

So I've been following the "cell phones" topic with interest. However, as a person who naturally thinks in numbers rather than words, I find myself a little confused about exactly what some peoples' positions are, and I'm having difficulty figuring out how many people feel which way. Thus, the poll.

Hell, I know people who would have an accident driving alone on a straight Nebraska road, whether they were talking on the phone or not.

I draw the line at talking on the phone while switching lanes (with your knee) and reaching for your Starbucks. There should be a law!

cell phones increase your risk of an accident by 400% and hands-free devices rarely help...i did a presentation on cell phones for one of my courses last semester.

The thing about this poll to keep in mind is that it is a poll taken in a population of auto enthusiasts. If this same poll were taken of the driving public in general, I think you'd get a whole different result.

The sad part of that is probably those who most need to be restricted from using the cell phone while driving are those who least see the need.

That's a good point. I'm not sure which direction the results would differ in, though. My own nonenthusiast friends are much more anti-cell-phone than people here - but then, they aren't necessarily representative of the general population, either. And some of those I see holding cell phones to their ears on the highway are driving enthusiast cars.

True.

Another thing that I find very interesting about this topic is that very few people really mean what they say. I know a number of people who will agree that cell phone use should be banned while driving, but put the phone to their own ear as soon as they get behind the wheel.

With regards to this topic, it's hard to know what people really mean or believe.

Rob, you make a good point. It's like a version of NIMBY.

Lots of people 'publicly' decry the use of cell phones by OTHERS....as long as their 'right' to chatter away is not affected
