Computer addiction or friend.....
Is your computer your "virtual friend" (see below) or is it more like an addiction
After kidding an Upstate NY S2000 friend by email about being online all the time, here is the reply that I got:
What do YOU think? Do you control your computer, or does it control YOU?

Jerry,
.....Sometimes it seems as though I'm online 24/7, but more typically it's 7-5 and some night hours. Most of my work is done on the computer and it just takes an extra button to keep the e-mail account alive while I've doing other things. Kinda like having a friend drop by while I'm at work, if you know what I mean.

with the others (mostly). The only time that I do not feel as though I am in control is when I want to hop on the Internet to research something like a phone number or to check the weather or traffic and the PC starts checking for updates for McAfee, Spy Sweeper, Window Washer, etc. and slows me down.
Isn't a computer just a tool? A sophisticated, complicated, and sometimes unpredictable (which is why I keep auto-updates off) tool, to be sure; but just a tool.
Now, I suppose this thinking could be extended to our cars -- aren't they just tools to get us from one place to another? And, of course, they are, with the caveat that beyond their generic tool-ness, they provide that additional spark of individuality and fun that we all know so much about.
Computers (to a lesser degree, for me) also have some of this spark. But, really, I think of mine (all 5, if you count the one at work) as sophisticated calculators. Tools. HPH
(Now. Let's see if I have a major system crash today!

I thought I was in control until the site went down (this is the only place I visit) and I started having withdrawal symptoms in the form of an anxiety attack. I thought, "I need help!" I can't help it if you guys and your lives (ups and downs) are addictive, can I?

Well, we all know I spend a bit of time here. Since I'm chained to a desk all day, you're all just a click away when it's slow, and I enjoy the company.
There is not much on TV that I care to watch, so I'm often here at night, while playing online Scrabble at the same time. Don't want to turn my brain into total mush.
I check in, AM and PM over the weekend, but don't look for me if the weather is nice as we'll be out and about.
Does my computer control me? No, not when I have something better to do. Am I a bit
addicted to this site, yes.
Edit: Google saved my tail the other night. Long story short a new sweatshirt of Rick's got candle wax on it. Google search told me to put a brown bag on the garment and iron the bag. The wax transferred onto the bag. Worked like a charm. The Internet can be very useful!

I love the computer for it's mulitude of uses with research tool and organizational tool being at the top of the list. I never hung out at any site before this one but it certainly has become a habit.
