Legal Bill ... just wondering if your expertise extends to privacy regulations?

i.e. I often see forum members (who for some reason or another have had a falling out) going at each other publicly and posting the contents of the other party's private messages and emails without permission.

On many boards publicy posting another party's PM's is severely frowned upon.

1) Where does the law stand on this and
2) how does the law apply when a privacy notice (such as you see at the foot of many company emails) is included in those emails & PMs?

Muz Do you mean the law here? In Australia? I suppose it differs. Look at copyright protection in China for example.

I see those kind of thing on various emails from my atty's, brokers etc. I'll it just depends on where you live.

Edit:I ran"US Copyright Law and the Internet" thru google and got 274,000 hits.

Looks like it's a popular subject, way too much research for me.

Sorry Muz.

I'm not sure about privacy regulations beyond things like Hippa which mandates health care providers maintian the privacy of medical information. Atty/client and other privileges require certain professionals to maintain the confidentiality of private information.

Freedom of speech allows you to publish. Slander and libel laws limit what you can say. Public figures are easier targets than private persons.

Do you have a specific issue you want to throw out as an example?

Muz,

I realize you were asking a legal question, but I agree that it's distasteful for "Private Messaging," such as it's implemented on a web site like ours, to be exposed publicly in a forum (unless both sides agree, of course).

I'd imagine that the legal stature of PM would be similar (if not the same) as email. I don't claim to know the implications of that, but that would be my expectation.
