Default Crazy Old Man?

We (me 63 years old and my wife 60 years young) have decided. On September eleven we are taking the S on an 1.100 mile (each way) trip from Kingwood Texas to Ironton, Ohio.

I'm anxious to try the S out on the twisty hilly roads of Lawrence Co., OH where I cut my sports car teeth many years ago in a '60 MGA. That part will be fun. It's the trip that worries me some.

Will we be sorry?

Errr.... you are only as 'vintage' as you feel (we try to avoid the "O" word as much as possible)

Seriously, 'S1997' drove his "S" solo from Houston to WV (and back) earlier this year, and 'Kyras' just completed her solo run from the west coast to Cleveland. Both seemed to thoroughly enjoy the trip.

Biggest problem for two is the amount of luggage you can't take with you . Probably have to mail or UPS most of your stuff to your OH destination, and then send all the laundry back home the same way.

Have a GREAT trip!

If you are paying any attention to the calendar years (I try not to) then I got ya by a few. We took a 3000 mile trip when we first got the car and I have had several 1500 since without any difficulties. My wife had some problems due to an old injury from being tossed off a horse. She discovered that our MGA we take on similar length trips is actually a better ride for her since the suspension and seats are not nearly as stiff. When she goes in the S2000 we add extra cushion (a lot in fact) and that solved her injury problem. Personally I find the S2000 seats to be firm at first but the longer I drive the more comfortable they become as they soften up due to body heat. The real clincher on a long trip is the ease with which the top goes up and the A/C but then one does forego the sense of adventure that is always there in driving a car nearly 50 years old. Southern Ohio has some great twisties.

My .02 is that you will be sorry if you do NOT do it. Then like most of us Vintage folks you will always wonder "what if"?

We did the Vintage Buckeye Run in July for the first time and are happy that we did. But that included the comraderie of others.

Behaps if you have the time, and the resources that you should consider extending to join us at the Vintage meet at Lake George in upstate NY?

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=312700

We are attending and it will mean a 1,200 mile three day weekend for us. A little over 500 miles each way and then the drive on Saturday.

Either way, I hope that you enjoy your drive.

Exactly what I was thinking. If you have the time to do it, why not? Have fun.

What are you worried about?

I posted the blue post that follows on July 22, 2005, after driving from Southern California to Ohio and back, for the Vintage Buckeye Run. (See the "Am I Nuts?... "https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=292685&st=100) I worried about hail storms, but never had any. I planned the trip out ahead for day-by-day, with hotel reservations waiting for me each night. I knew how far I had to drive each day. The only thing bad that happened to me was leaving my credit card case in a gas station in Amarillo Texas, and having to get by without a Visa for 3 nights until my new one was sent to Ohio. I loved my trip and wouldn't hesitate for any reason other than putting so many miles on my car, to do it again in a heart beat.

"I'm home!

Just got in after 12 days and 5,439 miles of S driving. I enjoyed the trip, all parts. It is currently 104* F at my house in Acton of Southern California so I'm getting rid of some of my junk and hitting the road again. My husband, Andy, is at Rincon Parkway with our motorhome, on the beach in Ventura, California and it's in the 70s there. I'm going to go join him for the weekend.

Photos and more info later."

Go for it. I've put 12 st hours driving in my S from N Ga for the S tip of Fla. No problems.

Here's a helpful hint however if you're going to be gone awhile... UPS.

Instead of packing it full and draggin the back end, send some of your stuff ahead of you.

It works great and it's reasonable in cost.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. We are excited. I wonder if we will be able to listen to books on cd above the wind and road noise.

We don't have to worry about packing. we have a home in OH with most of the clothes we will need.

Thanks again for you encouragement!
