Default Data Breach and Identity Protection

I have been notified that I am part of an apparently wide ranging hack of current and former gov't personnel information. The question is what am I going to do about it? I have no evidence that any of my personal info has been stolen/used. I've been offered (via the gov't personnel agency) 18 mo free for different types of monitoring. I'm just not sure I want to sign up for it. Do any of you have such a service and do you find it worthwhile?

Johns Hopkins had an incident where backup tapes were lost by a courier. We got 2 years of free monitoring for that incident. I am currently enrolled in the options provided by Home Depot after their fiasco. Do you NEED it? Probably not, but it will be up to you to maintain watch on all of your accounts. I would sign up if its free for you.

In addition, a co-worker forwarded the following article which you may find helpful: http://krebsonsecurity.com/2015/06/h...curity-freeze/.

Good luck!

My $.02 worth: I had a similar situation with a credit card and was offered 12 months free credit monitoring. I took them up on it and it was reassuring to get a monthly e-mail saying everything was fine. So, I would recommend that you do it.

As a Fed, I took advantage of the offer. There is no cost to you and the peace of mind is priceless.

I accepted Home Depot's offer for a years protection. I did get an e-mail when I applied for a credit account so I know it works.

Well, I may not be able to. When I tried to sign up it said could not process my request and to call. I called, along with apparently everyone else affected. Wait times so far 32-58 min.

Rick had the free service due to Blue Cross issue. I don't think we had to sign up for it. Good luck, Deb.
