That is a loss. He recently wrote of struggles with cancer as well.

 

The guy had a gift, so it seemed to me, for living the good life on the dime of others - car manufacturers, vendors, collectors, etc.

 

Great work if you can get it. He'll be missed.

 

The automotive community lost two friends this week.

David E. was largely responsible for the teriffic, if somewhat quirky writing in Car and Driver, a tradition that continues today. After a stint as founding editor of Automobile magazine, David E. returned to Car and Driver where he was a featured columnist. I read his final column in the latest issue last night shortly after learning of his passing.

Also it was anounced a day or two ago that Chris Econimaki's "Speed Sport News" is ceasing print publication with the current issue.

 

Sorry to hear of his passing. I always enjoyed his column in c&d back in the early 80's and saw him as a guest speaker at the greenwich concours a few years back.
