Deceptive motel practices
I clipped this in part from a much longer story about deceptive hotel rates. Amazing how this has gone from a couple dollars to serious money.
In a video interview with LinkedIn last summer, Marriott Chief Executive Arne Sorenson concedes the issue is a “tough one” and “none of us as consumers necessarily love it.” He added that Marriott has tried to be clear with its disclosure. “I don’t think they are going away,” Mr. Sorenson said. Marriott said in a statement it won’t comment on the specifics of the D.C. lawsuit but does plan to fight it “because we believe it has no merit.”
Likewise, Hilton said in a statement it doesn’t normally comment on pending legal matters, but added, “Resort fees are charged at less than 2% of our properties globally, enable additional value for our guests, and are always fully disclosed when booking through Hilton channels.”
Resort fees have gotten more creative, and in some cases more expensive. The Circus Circus Hotel in Las Vegas has rates as low as $22 a night on Hotels.com. The third screen in the booking process, after you click “Let’s Book,” shows $22 plus $2.95 taxes and fees. Then it says, “Mandatory fees collected at property: $36.28.” That $22 rate is really more like $58.
The Oyo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is even more sly: Its $23 rate excludes a mandatory daily resort fee of $41.95, making the actual rate almost triple the displayed room rate.

Years ago, we were at a little motel in VT in the Stowe area at check out I noticed a fee of $10.00 for resort, or property fees. Can't remember which. I know I fussed, and I think a credit was ultimately given, but I was not happy. Just put the REAL price out there so we can compare apples to apples when shopping for a motel/hotel room.
Hotels are notorious for this stuff. I was booking rooms for people for a meeting recently. "We can give you a rate of $144/night!" they said on the site and when I talked to them on the phone.
Yep, for A night... then the other nights were $160- $180... which we find out at check in. Oh ... plus state fee, govt fee, fee fee, fee because you are here, and THEN taxes.
This was staying in Sodosopa .... errr . I mean RiNo area of Denver :P

When we drive to Florida even year we always stay at Hampton Inn's. No hidden fees, clean rooms, great free breakfast and friendly staff. We got burned a few times when visiting the Caribbean, Canada and New York City but you just need to find out up front what the real fee is including hidden charges.
I frequently stay at the Starr Pass Marriott which has a golf course/resort fee of $35 a night.
but wait, I'm a government contractor so bugger off. I don't pay. of course then I go golfing... bwah hah hah.
