Default Dream House

As an archtect, it'd be fun designing for a client that appreciates cars (not a
solicitation).

I wonder what are some things you'd like to have in your home / garage that may be auto specific.

The best designs are often a response to the most challenging or unusual problems.

Hmmmm..... I wanted to be an architect before I knew how to spell it

Now that I have been an RA for over 30 years, I also forget how to spell it sometimes

Seriously, I think (on a modest scale) the neatest things in a home for a 'car phanatic' would be a temp/ humidity-controlled garage, with a TV, lounge area, rubber flooring, ultra-organized workbench and pegboard for tools/ implements. It should be a least a 4-car capacity, with some of the neat (but expensive] double 'designer doors'.

Oops - been sneaking in too much during working hours, so not proofing as I should.

A beautiful car is a wonderful sculpture, a successful culmination of form and function. How can one see it more often w/o living in the garage? Dan Tanner (Vegas detective show from the 70's?) in his T'Bird used to pull right in, but we know codes won't allow that for fire, fumes, and carbon monoxide reasons.

One idea is to create a lift that rises into a space enclosed in rated glass (cost is not an issues here). Now you can walk around and see your baby on 3 or 4 sides. This could be useful also to free up space below for multi-car parking, w/ the weekend 'toy' showcased.

A three-car garage, double deep for a six cars total. Each double bay has its own door with at least 4 feet between garage doors for extra space. Climate controlled. I prefer epoxy flooring in a solid color--makes finding small bits easier. Air is plumbed into the walls, with quick-connect locations throughout. All tools are behind cabinets, or in wheeled toolboxes. A nice long work bench is well lit, and has plenty of outlets. TV and stereo is a must.

If cost is no object, you might as well throw in a dyno, cnc center, mig & tig welders and an adjacent 3 mile test track.

Am I asking for too much?

I agree, and it has to have extra high ceilings so that a lift can be installed.

Ideally, the floor should be white, it's much brighter and it makes it easier to find dropped pieces.

Wired network with a T1 line for access to the internet.

A sink with hot and cold running water.

I'm working on a 25 million (1k / sf) and counting home; some people have the resources. The challenge is to convince them they should spend it a certain way, and you're the one to do it!
We had another client in metro NY that seriously considered making snow and a ski run w/ lift on his estate (yes, making it and keeping it from melting are 2 different things). He settled for a year round out door ice rink (energy hog).

Anyway, good thoughts about air, wiring, and yes, the test track would be nice...w/ some banked turns..

But seriously, some things we can sort of have when we 'retire' (not you Bob!).

A detail bay w/ washing, drain, etc would seem doable.

On a another scale, in the rec rm how about slot cars that run all over the floor, walls ('shelves'), clg (downforce anyone) or just a room of 'dirt' for RC track for off-road competition? This will prepare the next generation / grand kids to know the joy.

We haven't gotten to the furnishings yet...

All I want is a garage that is reasonably sealed against the dirt, leaves, insects, bugs, and everything else that find their way into my garage now. It seems that every time I open the garage, more dirt gets inside and there is no way to keep the inside of my garage clean.
