I remember watching films like that in elementary school, and being so frightened. We practiced the "Duck and Cover" routine in school regularly up through the 6th grade. People in our town who had the $$ were building Fall-out Shelters to keep them safe.

In the film, they show houses, trees, etc, flying around in the blast, but the turtle is still safe in his shell.

That is hilarious.

The film was designed to make us all feel safe in the event of a nuclear attack but when a 50 megaton device explodes anywhere nearby, Ducking under a desk may make the kids feel safe but...well....

When that came out, I was stationed at an isolated raar site in Manitoba Canada keeping an eye our for Soviet bombers coming over the pole.

That's similar to the feeling I'm safe when I go thru the gate checkpoint at the airport.

I must look like trouble becuase I get wanded about half the time

Where I live, ducking under desks is still a widely recommended emergency practice.

Earthquakes.

Do you think that this was the plan from the evil Communists - get us all hiding in basements of schools so they'd get a lot more of us all huddling together?

I remember hiding under the desks bit or lying down in a ditch if you were outside.

I also remember the bomb shelter craze. I wonder how many residential bomb shelters are left? Anyone you know build one?

Here's a modern one.

Around here we were always taught that in the event of a nuclear attack to place your head firmly between your knees and kiss your ass goodbye.

The drills were reserved for fires, tornados, and such.

My +1's Grandfather was a civil engineer.
He had an extension built onto his home in the 50's.
When the foundation was poured, it was poured in a way that would make the basement a bomb shelter.
My MIL still lives in the home...
and our children (23 & 21) know about it and what it is for.

I have some friends who live in a house that was designed and built by an engineer in the '50s. It's built into the slope of a hill, and the lower part was designed to be a bomb shelter.
