I was just reading an article that referred to west Antarctica.
The last time I looked at a globe Antarctica was at the pole.
what defines east from west? where do you start?

West Antarctica, or Lesser Antarctica, one of the two major regions of Antarctica, is the part of that continent that lies within the Western Hemisphere, and includes the Antarctic Peninsula. It is separated from East Antarctica by the Transantarctic Mountains and is covered by the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. It lies between the Ross Sea (partly covered by the Ross Ice Shelf), and the Weddell Sea (largely covered by the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf). It may be considered a giant peninsula stretching from the South Pole towards the tip of South America.

But why is it west?
yeha i'm sure there is some historical reference to it based on time zones international dateline etc.
probably more likely explorers were atlantic based heading to the "right side when pointing south" was west.
what do compasses do at the southern pole?

My wife and I howled at the video of the gal at the South Pole. We were blown away when she produced a MOBILE PHONE with an APP that is supposed to serve as an actual compass. Yeah, that is the real proof what an actual compass will do: an app written by some guy or gal in California.

It is not a bash, it is recognition most of the software/hardware design comes from the Golden State, the same state I have chosen to reside in most of the time. It is the geography, climate, and natural resources, (not the politics, pollution, human misery, 3rd world infrastructure, and the highest taxes in the nation) that keeps me here.
