Default Eagle Love

This morning while washing cars, I heard a couple loud calls and there were a couple bald eagles playing tag a few hundred yards over my head.

I thought it was a territorial dispute untill I saw one give the other a piggyback ride while in a steep dive. This is the second year in a row they've done the wild thing over my house.

That must be one hell of a rush because when they broke free they weren't that far off the ground maybe 400 feet.

GO EAGLES

Hum, eagles making while flying........... is that really how it works? When we go to northern Michigan every spring we see them flying over the cabin but I've never seen that!

I've heard that's how they do it. Much more daring than the owls I saw do it. The girl was sitting on a tree limb in that case.

How exciting to see it in real life and not just on TV or something.

All birds, even eagles, have a genetic predisposition to hover over anyone washing their cars. They must have just gotten bored...

I'm assuming that's what they were doing. Usually if it's territorial, the lower one will flare flip over and present talons. I've seen that before at this time of year as the pair will drive last years chick or chicks away.

Lets ask DEAN

He knows everything

Yep, many birds do it in mid air. We've got bald eagles and red-tailed hawks nesting in the live oaks in our front yard. We've also got a wild peacock population here. Evidently, someone raised peacocks here many years ago then died or moved away. I've heard them a few times, but I haven't seen them yet.
We've also got lots of turkey buzzards, but none of them have started circling my house yet so I must be O.K..

One morning, about a year ago, I had just left the gym in Pasadena. I was waiting at a light. A pidgeon flew from left to right across the intersection. Suddenly, a Perrigrine Falcon (there's a well known nest of them nearby) flew straight down like a bat out of hell, nailed the pidgeon in midair, did a U turn on a dime, and flew back up and disappeared. It just blew me away.

Well, we had a seminar, with pictures, about sea turtle sex the other day. Not nearly so spectacular, of course, and far more leisurely. Seems like those eagles are the people on the "street encounters" forum and the sea turtles are those of ... um ... well, I guess I won't go there. HPH

My Sister-in-Law lives in Richmond, VA and works in downtown Richmond. I few years ago the pidgeon population got out of control and the city brought in a number of Perrigrine Falcons to control the population. My Sister-in-Law has seen them "doing their job" on several occassions. Gee, I wonder if a Pidgeon taste "just like chicken" to a Falcon?
