Default End of the war in Germany

This Sunday, Mothers Day, marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the war in Germany. It is hard to believe what the world was like back then but our fathers and mothers sure did. Mine was in the Pacific serving under Admiral Halsey. That war did not end until August of that year. My Dad's brother served in the 3rd Army and served with Audie Murphy, WWII's most decorated soldier. He was captured, tortured and then escaped. I have an interest in WWII and have read many books about this conflict. I am currently reading a 4 book series titled "What our Fathers Saw". It is based on many interviews with surviviors of that war from the men and women who fought in Germany and the Islands leading to Japan. Their stories are compelling, sad and horrible. Some complain about quarantining for a few months yet these brave men and women endured many years of sacrifice and horror. Let's remember these brave men and women on Sunday who made up the Greatest Generation. They will all be gone in a short amount of time.

The more I learn about war, the less I like it. But it is an endlessly fascinating subject and an interesting way to study human nature and both individuals and societies under stress.

I find it more disturbing when looking at how good we have gotten at it.
