Default a father son tradition continues

I have fond memorise of my Dad taking me to the local Hess station the sunday after every Thanksgiving to pick up a Hess truck, or toy whatever they produced that year.

And now with the arrival of our son this year I ventured out to our local Hess station and picked one up for him. He is obviously too young to play with it but I will keep it for him and repeat this little tradition every year so that when he is grown he too will have fond memories of his Dad when he sees the Hess commercial on TV.

Here is a link to all the Hess trucks thruout the years http://www.hesstoytruck.com/

A great thing to do, and a great tradition to start. We did the same thing when the kids were younger.

Keep the boxes. Believe it or not, some of the trucks have become collectors items. If you have the original box they are worth considerably more.

A tradition that does indeed continues..

Although I never went to get the truck with my father when they come out, I can expect to receive a long rectangular box EVERY christmas morning from my Father.

For years, I would open the wrapping paper at one end, slide the box out, remove the batteries and put the box in the wrapping.....Ok that's really odd.

Wanna know the best part.......I'm 40 years old. I've revceived a Hess truck from him EVERY year since 1976!!!! (My brother as well). I have every box, every barrel...and the trucks are in MINT condition. I even collect the mini ones that come out in June.

The tradition continues.....My godson gets 2 hess trucks from me at x-mas. One to keep and one to play with. He'll be getting number 7 this year.

What a great tradition......Thanks for bringing back those memories!!!

What a neat tradition! I'm not sure my grandsons or granddaughters would think those were high-tech enough these days, though. I guess we should start some kind of tradition with them now, though. Charlie, for the next couple of years, though, his favorite part of the gifts will be the box

Charlie,

Another thing that you might want to do that we do is to buy sheets of commerative stamps and put them away. Someday, when your son grows up they may be worth a great deal of money.

We don't collect stamps, and we only do this every now and again when we go to the post office to buy stamps or mail packages.

Hess trucks can be a father-daughter tradition, too. We've been getting them for as long as I can remember. Dad also bought them for his best friend's son until the son left for the Army.

Hess trucks are a part of Christmas!

Up untill 15 years ago, when the local Hess station closed, I would buy one every year for my son. I think we both miss them.

Do you remember when they use to be $2.99 with the battery?

Charlie, your stories about your son and pictures are so heartwarming. Thanks for letting us in on your joy since before day 1. Brings tears to my eyes and I think we're having almost as much fun watching him grow are you are. Our first Vintage (or S2K) baby, I think. Does he have a nickname yet?
