Our flag is out. I didn't know it was Flag Day or Flag Week. But after taking her down for the storm, I finally got around to putting her back up yesterday. Lucky timing.
I might add, back in 1984 on cruise with the USS Kitty Hawk battlegroup in the Pacific, we made the crossing of the equator. This occasion was a daylong "ordeal" for newcomers (slimy pollywogs) becoming trusty shellbacks (veterans who have been through the crossing before-a service record is made of it). The pollywogs, both officer and enlisted, are initiated into the solemn mysteries and orders of the deep. The entire battlegroup becomes non-operational as ALL flags are struck, including Old Glory, and only the Jolly Roger is hoisted. Quite a sight seeing all the ships, carrier, cruisers, destroyers, fuelers, et all (can't see the attack subs) with only the Jolly Rogers flying in wind. I always wondered what the Russians thought of it peering through the periscopes!
Vexillology (/ˌvɛksɪˈlɒlədʒi/) is the study of the history, symbolism and usage of flags or, by extension, any interest in flags in general.
Vexillogists are also interested in principles of flag design.
