Default Friday the Thirteenth ...

... and I wake up to a dead computer (at home).

Aaack!

Of course, the scientist in me rationalizes about coincidence, etc, etc.

But ...

Dum dum dum dum ...

I was going to panic since I didn't realize this fact but I figure my luck can't get any worse!

Sorry about your computer. Do you back up your hard drive occasionally? Let's hope you can retrieve everything. Aren't you one of those "computeristically" savvy people?

Absolutely! I sure am!

And because my computer is dead I'm already looking at new ones, and I'm looking at Vista 64, just to prove how computeristically savvy I really am!

Of course, all that savvy doesn't necessarily translate into faithfully following hard-disk backup procedures, being as I'm so busy, busy, busy. So...

Worse case, I figure some shop with the right equipment can take out the disk and write it to a portable drive to rescue the data I want to rescue.

Best case, with the system off all day, it'll cool down enough to work and I can do the rescue myself. (The fan sounded haunted this morning, so I figure it's an overheating problem.)

And, on account of the day and all, I'll see about an exorcist. HPH

When you're finished with that exorcist, could you send him my way?

Entropy will not be denied its due.

I just finished uploading grades and I suspect some of the students will be turning to superstition for solace this morning.

Hey, hey, easy on the Friday the 13th stuff. It is just a coincidence that it happened today, take my word for it.
Today is my lucky day!!!!!! I was born 58 years ago today, so I see it as extremely lucky. I was not born on a Friday, it was a Wednesday at 4:10 am but I have been living with the 13th in July as an extremely lucky period in my life.
As far as the PC goes did it not boot up? Is it a dead drive where the OS resides? Or is it bad memory, a cooked Mobo, a fried power supply. So many things could be wrong, hopefully not a serious issue.

When they are deserving of one. But when some fail to show up for class, don't complete assignments, and miss exams, no I don't. Seeing to their self-esteem remaining intact doesn't rank very high on my priority list.

Bet they'll know next time not to play with you! Too bad they didn't see the perfectionism in your home projects like I did, or they would have known.
