Gambler's Math
My daughter in law was just in LV on business. She's a smart lady.
But even she succumbed to Gambler's math.
She took $500 with her for play money. Over the week she lost it. -$500
But, lucky her, she won $200 in the slots at the airport. +$200
When her husband asked how she did gambling, she said she won $200.
Another winner in Vegas. Anyone you know use gambler's math?
hahahaha

On another note, I won the Lotto...5 bucks of it anyway and I don't have to split with anyone.

Yes I always get a kick out of it. When people tell me I won say 1,000 or I got comped 1,000 I always ask how much did you lose? If they won 1000 and say they lost 1600 I tell them I'll give you a better deal give me 1600 and I'll take you out to a steak dinner and give you 1100 back.
I'm not much of a gambler. We've been to Vegas twice. Mostly for the shows and to use it as a base for travel to other scenic areas. I played with their money for a few days, and at the end of the week I maybe lost $150.00. Anything more than that is unacceptable to me.
We have two casinos near by. We've checked both of them out at one time or another. I don't think we left more than $50.00 at either one. I have a hard time tossing my money out like that.

My uncle and his buddies used to charter planes to fly from NC to LV or Atlantic City to gamble. The casinos picked up the tab, since they were high rollers. He never told my aunt how much he lost, of course. He told me years before he died in 1983 that it was $60K, but I doubt that was the amount. He used to gamble illegally in/near the town where he lived, too. One time he and his buds got robbed and their clothes stolen. Needless to say, the police were not notified.
When we were in Santa Fe there was a casino nearby. I'd never been to a casino, so we decided to give it a shot. I lost $40 in 30 minutes playing the slot machines. I was totally po'd. SO, the day before we were leaving, I decided to win my $40 back. I spent $20 (so I'm a negative $60). I then won $140, collected my $ and left. I have not been back to a casino since. I'm just happy I won double what I first lost and quit while I'm ahead.
We went to foxwoods with another couple for this "fantastic buffet"
after wandering the casino for a while looking at all the blue-hairs and thier oxygen tanks playing the nickel slots my wife decided we had to play.
She cashed a $20 and got half dollars coins. eventually she handed me $3 in coin and said I had to try it since we were there.
I proceeded to play 6 hands at 50 cent video poker. I won a total of $%.
I took out the 3 bucks she'd given me and handed it back to her while pocketing my $2 profit.
That would be the only money I ever played in a casino.
The way I figure it, God gave some people luck and the rest of us skill.

I have posted this before in another thread. I am NOT a gambler (per se, however I do play the lottery, which if I win could potentially be a life changing event, unlike the amount one could win in a casino).
I use to have two co-workers that liked to gamble and would make several trips a year to Atlantic City and one trip a year to Las Vegas.
They would give me a hard time about going to S2Ki meets with comments like: "Let me get this right, you drive several hundred miles each way over a week end to go driving when you get there with a bunch of people that you met through the Internet?" Since 2004, I would reply that is correct and we had a great time with those people that we now consider friends that we see maybe once or twice a year. We have a great drive, dinner and drinks and lots of socializing, etc.
Then I would come back with something like: "OK how much did you win? Oh, sorry to learn that it cost you $ XXXX to travel all that way to sit around a table and drink with a bunch of people that you don't know, or consider friends, and will most likely never see again, while giving your money to some faceless casino that likes you only for your money.
I find it interesting that one never hears about the losses. One only hears when a gamble at a casino wins, but unless pushed they will never volunteer how much it cost them over time to win what they boast about.
Gee, I wonder why after about the third time they stopped giving me a hard time about going to S2000 meets.

If you ask 5 guys how they did after an evening of poker, likely 4 will have won $10 each and one will have lost $5.
Just like the stock market: lose 50% and you must gain 100% to get back to even. But many don't understand that.
