Default GPS

I have procrastinated and put off the purchase of a GPS that I can use in multiple vehicles for far too long.

After reading the posting about the nasty weather on the SF07 predrive I am hoping to learn enough from experienced vintage members to finally purchase one.

Pros? Cons? Thanks in advance Jay

I love my Garmin StreetPilot 2610. I bought it for my driving trip from Cali to Ohio, for the Buckeye Run in July 2005. I've never regretted it. As a matter of fact, I just purchased the new one, in the link above, since it's $250 off from Costco, and I'm giving my son my 2610. I think this new one will be just like the 2610 I have except that this new one is preloaded with the maps, and it now says the street names, to turn on, not just turn right, without naming the street. My son has used my 2610 a few times and it's made it easy for him to get around as an 18 year-old.

I used the wisdom of Vintage to make my final decision in which GPS I bought. The reason I like the one I have, and the one linked to above, which I should get this week for my trip back to Virgina in 2 weeks, is because I can keep multiple routes in it. Not just one.

I will save each day's drive for my trip. I'll have the directions (route) saved for my drive on Sunday, from Acton to Albuquerque. I'll have my Tueday route saved, etc,. so all I have to do is touch "Activate route" and the directions I have saved for that day will come up. Some of the GPSs only can hold one route and not a list of many. I need many routes, or lists of directions, saved, for driving across country.

I don't think that's a feature we have in the Nuvi 350. We are still getting used to it. I think with ours, we select a destination and work from there. We can save the destination into "favorites," but have no option to save a route............at least I don't think we have that option.

Yeah, this one has a Route List. After making your routes you can save them or not. You can rename them how ever you want. Then, when you want that route the next time, you go to your Route List, touch (select) the one you want, and touch Activate (or Rename, Delete, Previous or Next). I currently have 25 routes saved. I always keep a few in there that I will repeat, like how to get to the tire guy down south of Los Angeles, or how to get to Christa's house.

I can take photos of the screen, Jay, if you would like to see what I'm talking about.

All I can say about the vintage member forum is "ask and ye shall receive, knock and the door will be opened!"

About 12 hours ago I asked for help, information and guidance in purchasing a GPS. A special thanks to valentine, Kyras, Lainey8484 and Emil St-Hilaire in providing websites, old forum info on GPS and handson experience with particular models and brand names. Using your info I have ordered the Garmin StreetPilot 2720 Text-To-Speech & Traffic Capability from Costco. I will have a week or so to learn how to use it to deliver me to SF07 to renew old friendships and make new.

I'm not real thrilled with how long Costco is taking to ship that GPS. I ordered it on Friday, the 6th. They didn't ship it until Thursday the 12th, and I won't have it until Wednesday the 18th. I don't know why they sat on the order for so long, before shipping it. I hope yours doesn't take so long.

Enjoy the GPS, Jay.

Our trip to VA will be the first long road trip with the GPS. If you've read the threads Val linked, you'll find they (GPS units) are not perfect, but I'm certain they will make travels easier, in most cases.

Be sure to look at a conventional map before you hit the road, and compare it with the route calculated by the GPS. For example, we prefer to avoid Route 95 S when heading to VA, so we select an additional destination near the highway we want to be on and work from there.

Looking forward to meeting you.

I borrowed a Megellan for the Dragon and it stopped working in the mountains around the same time we lost cell phone signal...... It worked OK, but I wasn't overly impressed but I'm on the fence with the Nuv- 660 - now $649 delivered from GPSNow.com ..... Why do I need a memory card and what size is recommended? What other options would you recommend?
