That's true - over time. But with today's tire compounds over time can be a really long time. I had Michelin tires on my MGA for 13 years and was driving them about 5,000 to 6,000 a year. I had them inspected by a tire expert (it was not someone from a local tire store but someone in the manufacturing process) and he said the rubber was still soft and the tires were ok. We both agreed on general principals it would best to replace simply due to their age.
Does this aging effect happen sooner on the SO-2s? Mine had about 11,000 miles and were about 2 1/2 years old.

I can't say. I replaced my rears at 12.6k because they DONE wore out. I swapped my fronts at 19.7k due to camber wear and finally replaced them at 23.7 because they too DONE worn out. I can't say the tire rubber was any harder. Naturally with less tread there was some loss of cushion in the ride but certainly no decline in grip in the dry.

Bottom line: As tires bald they grip better in the dry and less in the wet. So if you are going bald, it's not so bad.
Unless one is NOT referring to tires!

She's baaaaack!!!

She's looking better than before the mishap. Scratches and chips are all gone, everything's clean as a whistle. I'm a happy camper once again. Big ups to Bill (s2kbilly) and Roy (canberra a/k/a cranberry) who silently checked up on her behind the scenes as he (Cran) had known the owner for 40 years. These two guys made it possible for me not to have to run up to the shop all the time (1 hour away) by looking in and checking on my car so much that the manager had to comment "There sure were a lot of people looking out for you and this car." Bill dropped by so much they thought it was his car at first. Couldn't have done it without you guys and drinks will be on me next time we meet. I am truly a grateful granny tonight.

She drives and handles better than before and the interior looks new once again. I was very pleased with Schaeffer & Strominger Collision. Brian (the manager)was especially helpful and held my hand throughout the (9k+) ordeal. Thanks to Jim at Tirerack for such great service in getting the tires there so quickly.

Thanks everyone for your concern and offers of help. I really appreciate belonging to this great community of S owners. Thanks Cranberry, for staying on the phone with me and guiding me to the shop. More pictures tomorrow since I can't stay up waiting for the rest to upload tonight. I've fallen behind on the board but hope to catch up on what everyone's been up to soon. See a lot of you next week.
