I grew up in Florida and I've never heard of it.
I had never heard of it either until my parents bought a house in Tamarac that had one in the yard. It was more than 20 years old when we sold the place and it was only about 5 feet tall. The fruit looked like a minature orange - about the size of Kumquats. The fruit is very tart. We used it instead of lemons or limes.
