Frankly, I am quite surprised he hung on for as long as he did. I don't think the "pilot" appreciated how weak the human arm/hand/wrist is holding on like that. Most people cannot hold on for more than a minute. I would have made an aggressive attempt to land in the area I took off even if that meant a circle to return to landing.

Have never glided but a guy in my squadron did. Would stay up for hours.

Hang gliding was something I REALLY wanted to do in my early 20's. As a teenager, I would go watch the hang gliders with my dad, who was an air force pilot in the Korean War. I booked a hang gliding class in San Diego in 1981 or 1982 and then remembered that I owed my dad money he lent me when I moved to San Diego for my first "real" job. I paid him back and then never rebooked. I did try parachuting once but before then but the ride down gave me motion sickness and I felt terrible for hours afterward.

Also, if that were a commercial hang gliding operation, they should have their license revoked. There should always be a check and double-check of the equipment by the student/passenger and the instructor. That is basic to all aviation. Even when doing rapelling, the instructor always makes sure you have your safety harness secured, and confirms it before you go "on rappel."
