Hickory nuts
Poor little squirrels. Life is tough for those little fellas. Meanwhile, +1 is cracking up because I asked him a very simple little question: Where should I put my nuts to dry out? I don't understand what's so funny about that . . .
I also have a hickory that is having a banner year, but nothing to the level you have.
But to be honest as soon as I saw the title all I could think of was Euell Gibbons

Ha ha, nuts!
There's a great store in Houston that sells anything you could want in nuts and bolts; hardened, chromed, hex, metric, whatever. I'm dong some work on my car and needed some hardened bolts, so I Googled ,"The Nut Store". -- Well, that's a business that sells among others, pecans and 'hickory nuts'. Then i remembered I was looking for "The Nut Place". The salesman who helped me just laughed and said, "you should hear the kind of phone orders we get around Christmas time."

Back to the original post. We have one large hickory tree in our back yard, and the nuts from it are a royal pain. The tree's branches overhang our deck, and the falling nuts create quite a bang when they hit! And, like Val said, the 11,000 squirrels in the woods behind us completely ignore the nuts.
We had a black walnut tree in our side yard that was also a pain. The walnuts covered the driveway from August on, and the leaves and assorted other trash made a mess as well. The squirrels did seem to enjoy the walnuts after they were crushed by our cars' tires. So, 2 weeks ago, I had the tree taken down. It will now keep us warm next winter from the firewood it provided!
On my wife's families ranch, there is a big stand of old black walnut trees. Missouri is where gun stocks are made and AA black walnut is very expensive. I saw them sell an stick of trunk off a downed tree for 900 dollars and that was 25 years ago.
Take a good look at your black walnut.
