This may be old news. If not, check out this site's new home page with some very interesting articles.

I noticed it sometime before this thread, but I didn't really look at it. Now I have, and I don't like it: it has those pop-up ad links that are so annoying. I realize that the S2Ki folks need to make money, but these pop-up balloons are an unfortunate approach. Thing is, another site I used to frequent had this happen, first on the home page and then on the forum pages. On the forum pages, it's truly egregious, as it searched posts and modified them to include these ads.

These pop-ups are the double-underlined words in the home-page articles. There used to be a way to prevent them (by modifying your computer's hosts file), but I've forgotten how. If anyone knows about this, you'd be doing us all a favor by posting the method. HPH

If they start pop up ads here I can assure you that will be the last they see of me; I will be at S2kCA. Pop up ads are the most rude and annoying form of advertising I can think of. For example I used to go to the TV Guide site to look up programing - but no more. I deleted it from my frequently used links for that very reason and never went back.

I get lots of spam on my main email account, but pop ups have not been a problem in a long time :knocksonwood:

My internet service (or is it my browser) provides an integral pop up blocker that seems to be quite effective. There's a little flash when one is blocked....allows one to click on the toolbar....in the unusal event that you WANT to see it

Well -- sorry -- "pop-up" isn't necessarily the right way to describe this obnoxious behavior. It's not separate browser windows, it's balloons that pop up when you roll over a double-underlined word. There's probably another name for that, but it's just as annoying as separate-window pop-ups. HPH

An update: On the electronics forum, they've been complaining about this as if it's particularly annoying to non-members, who must see more ads that we do (and it sounds as if threads are indexed). Because most folks here are members, it probably isn't as much of an irritation here. Here's the thread.

I've found the FireFox AdBlock extension to work fine (no double-underlined home page words now for me!); and there used to be a way to eliminate this for IE and Netscape with a hosts file tweak -- but that doesn't work now on FireFox so I don't know but what Intellitxt figured out how to bypass it. I don't want to post the tweak, as that's a system file, but I'll mail it to people who request it. HPH

Been using Firefox with the Adblock extension for quite some time now...

No annoying ads or intellitext here!

Same here. No ads, no "intellitext" for me either, except I didn't even know there was an "itellitext". I use Firefox for most of the webbrowsing that I do, but still keep aol for some of my e-mail and my daughter's use. I rarely get any popups except when I read the NY Times online.

Val -- If you don't have a specific adblocker (like the FireFox extension), I'm surprised you don't see these. I'm referring to the words in the S2Ki home page articles that have double underlines. You roll over those words with the mouse and you get a little ad balloon that pops onto your screen.

Unless, that is, Gold Members have them blocked while we normal members don't. And, apparently, guests see all sorts of other advertising, at least according to that electronics thread.

As I said before, I don't object to the S2Ki ownership making some money. At the same time, I really don't like these stealth methods -- they're too close to spyware for my taste. HPH

Hmm.... if you would like, you can / should express your feelings about how stuff is run on s2ki in the site info forum. Especially if you have some improvement ideas in mind. The site administrators will see your posts there and cogitate.

I haven't given much thought to some of the new things, although I was asked about an article to post there (regarding windshield tape removal).

If you have some ideas, let 'em know.
