Default How would this board react?

A month or so ago a member of a Porsche Forum died in a 'line of duty accident'. The guy was a firefighter who got stuck with a needle while resuscitating a junkie. He died of Hepatitus C after a long illness. That's certainly a sad thing.

What is interesting is the forums reaction to his death. He was only marginally active in the forum (70 posts over a few years) yet the forum treated him like he was family. He left behind an unfinished Porsche restoration project. The car is a 1976 911 that is completely dissasembled, needing paint & an engine rebuild & a bunch of other work. Within a day the members of the forum had established a fund to gather funds to finish the project. By the end of a week or so the forum had money & volunteers to finish engine, the body & interior. The local forum members organized into teams, each with specialists in a specific area, and has outlined a plan where the widow is to be presented with a fully restored car just as was her husbands dream. They have about $5K in donations and commitments from board sponsors for parts & materials.

It is worth reading the first & last pages of the thread.

Would theS2K community do the same?

Its hard to know how any board would react to this, and I hope we don't have to find out with something like this.

I do know that many of the local clubs are tightly knit, and Vintage is a very tightly knit, dedicated group.

I hope I speak for everyone when I say this would be a slam dunk in Vintage. Especially if it were someone we "knew".

It's certainly not the same, but one of the Delaware Valley members did have a very serious family crisis see LINK about 18 months ago. Our local club as well as board members from all over the country certainly rallied to his support over a 13 month period....positive conclusion

Yes, I think I can say with confidence that the Vintage members would rally if needed. We've become a pretty closeknit group in a short period of time. It's really nice...

Dana Janigan, one of the long-time members of the New England community passed away last year. Here is the link to one of the many threads about him:

We are planning a memorial event to raise funds for a Charity in his name. I can't begin to tell you all the things that other members did for him while he was ill. I met him several times, but never had the opportunity to hang out with him.

Yup!

I've admired a few of the s2ki folks over the last few years who have been terminally ill but remained active with their cars and their clubs. Their posts have been quite memorable, and their love of live is infectious.

All I can say is that despite the fact that we're a virtual community, we relate to each other so well. No question we rally.
