There will be lots of flooded cars coming up for sale. One more thing to be aware of.

If any of you are considering donating for the benefit of Hurricane Harvey victims, please be careful and make sure you are familiar with the organization you are donating to. As always happens after disasters like this, a number of so called charities spring up, many (not all) of whom are scams. You might want to stick to the bigger, better know charities.

Harvey was an unthinkable tragedy, and it's victims need all the help we can give them, but please make sure that you're generosity and help goes to them and not into the pocket of a scam artist.

I don't know how many of you are familiar with Rotary International. RI has been working for years to wipe out polio worldwide. (more recently partnered with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) There are several Rotary Districts in the south Texas area. I am including three of them here that have a charitable organization that compliment the district organizations which are not "charitable" organizations (although they are non-profit). If you want your tax deductible money to go to victims of the hurricane and flooding, with little or no overhead, here are some choices for you:

Rotary District 5910: Send checks to Rotary District 5910 Charitable Foundation, c/o Bobbie Applegate, 985 IH-10N, Suite 111, Beaumont, TX 77706.

Rotary District 5890: Send checks to District 5890 Charities, Inc., c/o Jackie Barmore, 3525 Preston Ave., Pasadena, TX 77505.

Rotary District 5840: 501(c)3 – Send checks to District 5840 Foundation (Disaster Fund), Attn: Bobbe Barnes, Treasurer, P. O. Box 13, Boerne, TX 78006.

I would indicate flood/hurricane victims on your check. Thank you.

OTOH, some on the riverbanks, etc. were clinging to the roof praying for rescue. Our daughter lives inland and what one would think is a better place to be than where we are, but she had more problems with overflowing drain systems, etc. than we did. Sigh. We are just waiting and hoping. I am cursing that butterfly in West Africa that fluttered its wings too hard and created this system.
Irma is looking not so nice right now. Have to see what she does next week.

My dad was a Rotarian for many years and nominated for District Governor, which he did not end up taking. I agree that it's a worthy organization.

I have given many pints of blood to the Red Cross over the years. Then I found out a lot of that blood is sold, at prices higher than what is needed to cover reasonable operating costs. When I think of my blood being used to raise cash to overpay the organizations executives it makes my blood boil. And after that it is probably not suitable for donation anyway. So I have cut way back on my donations. Probably not a productive protest but it makes me feel a little better.

But all that considered, lets not paint the thousands of Red Cross volunteers with the same brush. They do a lot of good out of the goodness of their hearts.
