Default I'm a lumber jack and I'm ok

In our early October snow storm we got dumped with a foot of snow.
The leaves were all still on the trees and sadly one of my oaks got heavily damaged in the crown.
The tree already had a pretty severe problem with gall wasps so I suspect it was just insult upon injury.
The tree was also overhanging our deck and we were concerned that the hanging broken branches would come down and hit the house and the deck.
So yesterday I trussed up a guy cable and tensioned it with a come-along to make sure it fell where I wanted ( as opposed to my great room)

so it was time to get to work
first notch the front...

then cut through the backside leaving a little of the tree to act as a hinge.

why the hell won't this thing fall....

a little more and ooops there she goes

ok get me out of here

Tiiiimbeeeerr

yeah ok so the saw did all of the work.
so why I am I do tired???

kudos to the +1 for coming out and taking the pics.

and half the trunk has now been cut up into fireplace lengths although not split yet.

and oh yeah, I dropped it exactly where I wanted to

that was a serious concern that weighed heavily on the decision to take it down.
A coworker last year was dropping a tree and something went seriously wrong.
He was in a coma for 8 weeks, after 6 months was learning to use a fork again.
I had no desire to be part of the sequel.

Given the proximity to the house, The tree guys wanted a bucket of money to take it.

I'm glad you managed to get it done without getting yourself injured. Good Work!!! (Also knowing you have that little inner desire to be the dumbest person in the room I'm glad you didn't resort to stupid tactics).

Were you wearing safety glasses. I got whacked in the eye using a large hedge trimmer and now I wear them all of the time. Doesn't take much when you use power equipment. Good job.

I was wondering about the safety glasses too. I have a pair of chain saw chaps. They protect your legs for being cut. Also how about ear protection?

Sorry, it is just the safety manager in me coming out.
