Default Insurance

For about the last 30 years I have been insured with the company that's "on your side," and have been reasonably satisfied with them. Well, a couple weeks ago I got the renewal notice for our auto club, (you know, the one whose initials are right before BBB) with an invitation for an insurance quote from them. I did the on-line quote, and shortly thereafter, an agent called me to get some more information. After he checked with his underwriters, he gave me a firm quote for our auto and home insurance that is almost 26% lower than I had been paying, plus it offers higher liability coverage. When I called our old insurance agent today to cancel, she admitted that there was no way that they could even come close to matching the new rates. She did say that people who have switched to Flo's insurance don't save much, if anything.

So, even though it was somewhat a pain in the butt to switch, it was definitely worthwhile for me. Of course, YMMV.

TL;dr Switched insurance company and saved a considerable sum of change and got higher coverage.

We use an independent agent and every 1-2 years I have him reprice it with at least three companies. We went to our current carrier about 5 years ago and saved ~10%. About 2 years ago the company that we use went to a "combo" plan, or a single policy to cover homeowners, auto and umbrella liability, and our combined rates went down ~10 additional.

That said, we will continue to "rebid" the policy every couple of years going forward.

Gene, I haven't gotten a quote lately but once I tried Auto Club and it was higher than State Farm, who I use. I chose State Farm because according to some insurance companies I live in a "fire zone" and they won't sell me homeowners insurance but State Farm would. I get the multi-policy discount with State Farm for auto and home. I have my motorcycle with Geico, though. I never ride it but just in case I ever want to I keep it licensed and insured.

^^^Ken, I am kicking my butt for not re-bidding this several years ago. I could probably have saved a substantial amount had I done so.

Patty, it wouldn't hurt to check again.

I have USAA, and whenever I get a call from other insurance companies, they flat out tell me that they can't beat USAA rates.

Thanks. I did request an on-line quote from them previously, but they did not want to cover my NSX.

I have USAA, also. Can't beat them with a stick.
