It's just a BILLION...
This explains it very well.
The next time you hear a politician use the word "billion," casually, think seriously about whether you want that politician spending your tax money. A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into perspective in one of its releases.
A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
A billion days ago no-one on earth walked on two feet.
A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate the government spends it.

Ouch - we have gov't problems up here at the moment...the current gov't is making mult-billion dollar promises trying to stay in power. That's on top of the billions they have wasted in the past

Granny,
The US debt at this time is ~7.8T, with a population of 295M our debt is a little over $2600 for every man, woman and child and that is growing literally by the minute! Does that add a little perspective?

[QUOTE=JonasM,May 16 2005, 12:30 PM] Add to that the unfunded liability of Social Insecurity, which last I heard is somewhere in the range of 23 Trillion, plus the unfunded liability of Medicare, currently at 62 Trillion (that's not 6.2, it's 62!) - Now we're talking real money.

Can that be right? It's definitely a thought provoker but I wonder if it is accurate.
