Johnny Carson is Gone
Carson was recently reported as still sending jokes to David Letterman for use on his show.
Carson was said to have considered Letterman his real successor, not Jay Leno.
(Personally, I prefer Leno.)

I just posted about this in the S. CA forum.
As a 32 year old, I'm old enough to vividly remember Johnny but supposedly young enough to better "identify" with the newer guys (Leno, Letterman). Be that as it may, I don't think anyone holds a candle to Johnny. He was very, very funny. And (at least from what I've seen on TV) a class act to boot.
Good bye, Mr. Carson. Rest in peace.

The famous golfer story:
Arnold Palmer's schedule didn't allow for him to appear on a particular date, but his wife accepted, to represent him.
Carson asked Mrs. Palmer if she ever did anything to encourage her husband's success, before a tournament.
She replied that she sometimes will kiss his balls.
Carson said: "I'll bet that really makes his putter swing".
(Carson's quick wit got him in trouble that time.)

RIP Johnny.
I was a life long fan of his. I was fortunate enough to go to the show back in the 60's before he moved out to L.A., back when it was filmed at the NBC studios at Rockerfeller Center.
Late night TV has NEVER been the same without him.
