^^^^ As silly as this may seem I think that I have a simple solution for the rising sea levels that threaten cities like Venice, Italy and lower Manhattan, NYC.

JUST pull all of the water vessels that are NOT being used to dry dock. Just think about all of the boats and ships around the world that are displacing water. I am NOT smart enough to calculate how many tons of water are being displaced by all of the ships and boats that are just sitting in the water and NOT being used. How ever, I think that you get my point!

oh you poked the engineer bear

Surface Area: The ocean covers roughly 360 million square kilometers ( square miles) of the Earth's surface.from google
As of early 2025, the global merchant fleet has a capacity exceeding 2.4 billion deadweight tons (DWT). This fleet includes over 100,000 ships, with the total capacity of the world merchant fleet having grown by approximately 67% between 2013 and 2025 due to increasing demand for seaborne trade.

Key details regarding global vessel tonnage:
  • Total Capacity: The global merchant fleet capacity reached over 2.4 billion DWT by 2025.
  • Vessel Count: As of January 2023, there were 105,500 vessels (100 GT or more) in the world. Another estimate from 2023 suggests a merchant fleet of 118,928 vessels.
  • Top Countries by Tonnage: Greece is the leader in maritime capacity, holding 364 million DWT (17.77% of the world's capacity), followed by Japan (233.1 million DWT) and China (228.4 million DWT).
  • Breakdown: About half of the world's ships are dedicated to transporting goods, while the other half are used for service functions like fishing and tugs.
  • Dry Bulk Fleet: As of December 2020, the dry bulk fleet alone consisted of 12,312 vessels, with a capacity of 912.2 million DWT.
  • Growth: Seaborne trade volume has tripled since 1990, driving the massive increase in total ship tonnage.

So we can convert cubic meters to displaced height.
Good old archimedes figured out mass equals displacement.
if we say
volume = displacement we can make some substitutions.
Volume - area x depth.
Displacement weight x density
so then we have area x depth equals weight x density
divide both sides by area,
depth = (weight x density)/ area.
depth = (2.4 billion DWT x (1 ton /m^3) / 360 million square kilometers but to make units match we need to change sq km to sq m so multiply by 1x10^6
depth = (2.4 x 10^9 x 1 )/ 3.6 x10 ^8 x 1 x 10^6
depth = (2.4 x 10^9 / 3.6 x 10^14
depth = 6.6 x 10-6 M or 66 microns. less than the width of a human hair.

So in other words: I am wrong!
