Default learning to drive

This afternoon I took #2 son out to learn to drive the toy.
Although he's had his license for a little over a year, He's never driven manual so it was time to learn.
I took him to the old fort devens base area where there are lot's of big parking lots and unused roads.

He must have had a great instructor ( ) becuase he took right too it.
Stalled it a few times but got smooth pretty quickly.

I had to chuckle at one point though.
He had the car stopped pointing into a real big open area of a parking lot.
He then proceeded to close his eyes and rev the engine up and down a few times then do the same as he eased the clutch in and out.
he wanted to listen and hear without the distraction of the dash and the surrounding and feel the car.

OOOOooooohhhhmmmm

he was becoming one with the car.

of course later when asked how he liked driving it, his response was "hey it's a car, it's transportation to get you from one point to another. "

where did I go wrong???

I think I need counseling after that traumatic statement.

of course next time maybe we'll find

Doh! Kids never want to be like their parents at that age I wasn't a big enthusiast until 92 when I got my first Honda.

Maybe some VTEC will get him in the right frame of mind

Jerry, this part sounds like my son. He knew how to drive, also, but I wanted him to experience the S, and try a stick. As I recall (this was about 2 years ago) we only took it out once. He just wasn't excited. I wonder if he'll feel the same way when he sees my NSX.

I taught both of my daughters and their first cars were sticks. I also taught my wife, before we were married, to drive my 66 GTO with a 4 speed Hurst shifter and no power steering. That was an experience!!

I actually learned to drive a stick while working for the city water and sewer department. At that time (60's) all the trucks were sticks.

I'm trying to think if I have ever had a period in life since then that I didn't have at least one car with a stick. I only remember one period of maybe 3 or 4 years. I sold my BMW 2002TII. Then after a few years I got to buy an S.

At one point, my wife and I had 4 cars: a 3 speed, a 4 speed, a 5 speed and an automatic.

I want to teach my daughter to drive a stick, but absolutely do not want to teach her on the S.

Maybe he thinks that's the mature, responsible answer that Dad wants to hear. Most kids probably won't tell their parents "I can't wait to see how fast it can go" even if that's what they're really thinking.

If it is only "transportation" then let him drive a KIA for a while. He will change his tune quick enough!
