I have read that the specificity of the targeted objects stolen strongly suggest that a collector wanted those not to melt down, but to keep. The world may never see them again as it is, but they may exist elsewhere. There are easier ways to get precious metals and gems than what they did. They would have cleaned the place out if so.
BTW, someone seems to WANT A CROWN.

That is quite plausible. If you own these Crown Jewels. but you can't really show them to anyone, what is the benefit? Does someone who own art treasures derive that much joy simply from knowing that you have them? I heard on the radio Louvre opened the doors less 100 million dollars. They have to do better job in securing their treasures.
