We had a neighborhood block party tonight, and one of our neighbors walked by with Sam. Sam is a 27-yr. old macaw and for more than 20 years lived in the bar of the Kahiki polynesian restaurant here in Columbus. When the restaurant closed down, his new owners bought him as a house pet. He is very friendly and his owners enjoy walking him around the neighborhood on a baby stroller. The first photo shows him perched on the stroller. Sam used to be Samantha (it isn't easy determining male from female macaws) until he had surgery to correct a medical problem and they found out that Samantha was really a Sam!
My next door neighbors for 22 years, have a Macaw that I babysit quite often. I think she's a girl. I let her out in the morning, turn on the stereo, give her treats and change her water. I go back before dark to get her back in, usually with a cheese bribe or some kind of nuts. It works out good for us since they can usually take care of my dogs when I'm gone.
After seeing your photos, Dennis, I'll have to try next time to get a nice close up like you did.
My neighbor's does. When I go over and go in the kitchen to get her treats she'll keep saying "Hello?" She was talking quite a bit the past week when I watched her but I can't remember what she said. For a while she was imitating Junette's laugh and it was really funny. She's really Rod's bird though. They never had kids so "bird" is their baby. She's very smart. They are great with their tongues. If I give her a grape she'll peel it and eat the inside.
