To mod or not to mod ?
I was reading in Super Street today that a CAI and a Cat- Back on an S2000 were only good for at best 5hp....
My question to everyone here is why spend 800.00 or more for 5hp?
I believe the CAI was a K&N Typhoon and I'm not sure of the Cat-Back brand.

Good question. I'm betting most Vintage owners won't do much modding. I got the Spugen single exhaust to pick up a small amount of power and deduct about 20 - 25 pounds from the rear and left side of the car. I just got my Saner sway bar. This should reduce some of the oversteer when I autocross and is a must have when I go to Hoosier tires. I did buy the Beltronics Vector FX2 accelerometer to test how my mods affect the performance. It is a really neat toy that I bought myself for my birthday. I'll bring it to FC if anyone wants to see it.
I spend a lot of time researching before I get anything and racing in the stock class greatly limits what I can do anyway. if I could, I would add an undercarriage x brace. They really help the car handle over bumpy roads and smooth out the ride over broken pavement. I was really surprised by this improvement when I drove another owner's car.
I see a lot of young guys putting thousands into the car to try to gain performance. Much of it is illusory or actually looses power. Honda did about as much as you can with a N/A 2 litre motor.
Others put tons of money into appearance mods like wheels and body kits to individualize their cars. I like the looks of my car as is, but I wouldn't mind some nice light forged wheels. Just my .02

I'm with you Bill. I think that there really isn't much to do. Unlike you, I don't ever track the car so most of the performance mods would be lost on me. Like you, I think the car is fine the way it is and doesn't require much.
I have put in rear speakers to enable me to hear music when I drive. I have painted the calipers (silver, the most understated color) to prevent rust and I have added a fumoto valve. With the possible exception of a x-brace that is all the mods I plan on.
I agree with Popeye. $800. does seem like an awful lot of money for 5 hp. Especially when I have other priorities.
That said, I imagine that there are many Vintage owners who feel exactly the opposite. Thats ok too. To each his/her own.

I've changed or made modification to every vehicle I've ever owned. I think cars are a personal statement. I find purity for the sake of purity kind of boring. I also believe that everybody should do what they want with their cars, they belong to them.
The trick is finding the right modifications. Since the advent of the internet, researching other peoples screw ups has become easy and there is a lot of good info out there. I use this technique on my car as well as my business and I find it highly effective.
Form does follow function...make it what you want for you...just be sure you have the cash to cover your modifications and your mistakes.
Both BIll and Rapier have modified thiers S2k's to suit their needs and they did the research when they decided. Get into the archives here. There is lots of good info to help you decide not only whether you want to modify but if you do, what works and what doesn't.
S2000's are a well designed car..but anything can be made better and for my purposes I believe have done so.

I'm afraid I'm one vintage owner that does not fall into the pattern. I've modded my car to the gills. My Neuspeed cat back was the first significant mod I did on the car. I didn't do it for the power. I did it to change the sound. I simply didn't like the way it sounded. To me, it was just too much like a typical Japanese "four banger". I wanted it to have a deeper, throatier sound and that's what I got. Then I did various intake mods to help the car perform better on those HOT, "stop and go type" of days. Again, I didn't do it to add power but in this case, it was to help me keep the power I already had.
I do mods on this car because that's what I like to do. It is a hobby, a "hands on" experience with my car. To me, there is no equating the money I've spent with any numerical HP gain. The immense satisfaction of doing it all by my own hands and what I've learned along the way far outweigh any money it may have cost me.
I've had several sports cars that I never "touched". I've never had quite the satisfaction with them that I have with this one. So what does that tell you?

bling bling man, bling bling.
I am probably like most Vintage types. I like the stock look. I do have the best stereo system I have ever had, in this car. It's not the greatest. I still use the stock head. It was my second mod. First was a window tint.
I think my list of future mods are; 4.44 gears and a super charger. No turbo headaches for me.
Best bang for the buck.
Thanks xviper, and all the other S2K pioneers.
